Foothills horticulture for people who will actually follow a protocol.

Moss & Mayhem is an advanced, North Bend–specific growing course: soil chemistry, irrigation design, phenology, and cultivar strategy— written for competent home growers and openly hostile to “just water it when it looks sad.”

Systems modules (take these before you buy plants)

North Bend sits in the Cascade foothills: cool summers, long wet shoulders, acidic native soils, and biotic pressure that punishes wishful siting. If you skip systems and jump to crops, you are the student who shows up to lab without the pre-lab—and still wants full credit.

Crop modules

Fourteen production modules. Same scientific skeleton every time—irradiance, edaphics, irrigation, nutrients, phenology— plus crop-specific advanced practice. Field notes roast the classic beginner mistakes so you do not have to reenact them for “experience.”

Garden systems, not vibes

Crops don’t live in isolation. Your tomato cage fails if drainage fails. Your lavender dies if winter water sits. Start with systems modules, then crop production—or reverse it like a chaos agent and relearn prerequisites the hard way.

Application essays: same standards, fewer bullet points, zero credit for magical thinking.

Rain is not watering

Why 60 inches of annual precipitation still leaves July plants gasping.
